Configuring attachment filtering options in SecurityGateway

This article explains how to configure SecurityGateway to restrict the sending and receiving of certain attachments based on their extension, to keep users from receiving potentially dangerous viruses, or to help cut down on bandwidth and disk-space being used to send and receive large files.

From the Dashboard, after logging in:

  1. Click on Security, in the lower-left corner.
  2. Locate the Filtering section
  3. Click on Attachments

You will then see two sections: Attachments to Block, and Attachments to Quarantine. Any message with an attachment matching one of the extensions given in the Attachments to Block section will be refused for delivery completely. Messages with attachments of a type listed in Attachments to Quarantine will be accepted but put into the quarantine queue for review by an administrator or the recipient, if SecurityGateway is configured for personal quarantine review for users.

To add a new extension to either list, type it into the top field and click the add button. Note that the '.' in front of the extension is not needed.

To remove an extension from filtering, select it from the list and click on the Remove button. Note that you may select more than one extension to remove by Shift-clicking, or Control-clicking, multiple items.

SecurityGateway also has a number of links you can click that will automatically populate either the blocked-attachment list, or the quarantine-attachment list, with a number of default extension types. They are as follows:

  • Block executable files (.app, .dmg, and .exe)
  • Block image files (.bmp, .gif, .jpg, .png, .tif, and .tiff)
  • Block movie files (.3gp, .asx, .avi, .divx, .m4u, .mov, .mp4, .mpeg, .mpg, .qt, .rm, .rts, .swf, .wm, and .wmv)
  • Block audio files (.aac, .aif, .aiff, .au, .cdr, .m3u, .m4a, .mid, .midi, .mod, .mp3, .ogg, .ra, .wav, and .wave)
  • Block compressed files (.gz, .gzip, .rar, .tar, .tar.gz, .tgz, and .zip)

Additional Comments

These settings can be configured globally for the whole server, or for individual domains.
