Troubleshooting Spam Issues in MDaemon:
Create a Message-ID Header to Make Mail Tracking Easier
MDaemon can be configured to create its own message-ID header if an incoming email message is missing it. Often the tools used by spammers to generate email messages will not create a message-ID header, and that can make tracking of messages through MDaemon's logs difficult. To configure MDaemon to create a Message-ID header for each incoming message, follow these steps:
1. In MDaemon, select the Setup menu, then click on "Preferences."
2. Click on "Headers" in the left-hand navigation menu.
3. In the section labeled "If missing, insert these headers," check the "Message-ID" box.
4. Click "Apply" and "Ok."
|
Analyze the X-Spam Headers to Troubleshoot Spam Issues
If running SpamAssassin, and spam messages are making it through, the following two email headers provide information as to why:
• X-Spam-Processed: Shows whether or not the message was scanned by MDaemon's spam filter.
• X-Spam-Report: Shows which SpamAssassin rules are being triggered by the message.
X-Spam-Processed will show whether or not the message was processed by the spam filter. Reasons why mail may not be processed by the spam filter include:
• Sender or recipient is on "White list (no filtering)" (Security | Spam Filter | White List (no filtering).
• Message exceeds the size that SpamAssassin is filtering (Security | Spam Filter |Options).
X-Spam-Report will show the total spam score, the spam threshold, and the SpamAssassin rules that were triggered and their scores. "Why was this message marked as spam?" This email header will tell you.
|
Prevent Spoofing Attempts
Spoofing entails the forging of an e-mail header so that the message appears to have originated from someone other than the actual sender. These MDaemon options can help cut down on spoofing:
• Turn on MDaemon's SMTP authentication requirement for local users.
• Security | Security Settings | SMTP Authentication.
• Check the box "Authentication is always required when mail is from local accounts."
• Use MDaemon's IP Shield feature.
• For more information, refer to this knowledge base article.
• Enable the POP-before-SMTP option
• POP before SMTP requires a user to first check for new email messages before the user is allowed
to send outbound email messages. For more information, refer to this knowledge base article.

Reset the Contacts & Calendar Data on a BlackBerry Smartphone
In certain situations, it may be necessary to reset the calendar and contact data on a BlackBerry smartphone with the data stored for the corresponding BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) enabled MDaemon account. See the knowledge base article for instructions.
