SecurityGateway is the Key Ingredient for Boston Culinary

What is the best recipe to keep Microsoft Exchange inboxes free from spam and viruses? For Kevin Hookway, Chief Information Officer at Boston Culinary, the answer is easy: one part SecurityGateway, one part ProtectionPlus. The result has his general managers, chefs, and other corporate employees feeling very satisfied.

Boston Culinary provides food services throughout the United States to venues such as football stadiums, movie theaters, convention centers, resorts, and restaurants. Mr. Hookway needed a product that would keep his Exchange email server clean and also require very little maintenance.

The SecurityGateway and ProtectionPlus combination provided the recipe for success. The conversion was seamless to his users and took less than an hour to implement. The results couldn’t be better: weekly spam administration time has been reduced from 20 hours down to 2 hours and his end users have noticed a reduction in spam.

"We had resources allocated for a half day just to check what was trapped in the spam filter," said Mr. Hookway. "This job is now down to an occasional browse. The graphs and reports of junk vs. good email, inbound/outbound email, and recipients receiving the most email are very impressive."

View Bayesian Learning Results in SecurityGateway

When selecting the "Learn Now" option in SecurityGateway, you have the option to review the results in SecurityGateway's log files. After a message is accepted for Bayesian learning, it is placed into a queue. This queue is serviced by a separate Bayesian learning process.

You can configure how often this process runs from Security | Heuristics and Bayesian | Click here to configure SGSpamD. The results of the process are logged to a "BayesianLearning.log" file, which can be accessed from Logging | Log Files | All Log Files.

How to cut down on spoofing

We have recently received a number of reports of spoofed mail being delivered. This can be corrected by making a slight adjustment to the SMTP Authentication configuration.

In MDaemon:
 1. Go to Security | Security Settings.
 2. Select "SMTP Authentication" in the left-hand navigation pane.
 3. Check the box "Authentication is always required when mail is from local accounts."
 4. Make sure "...unless message is to a local account" is NOT checked. Having this box checked means messages addressed to local accounts, even if they are coming from a spoofed local address, are not subject to SMTP Authentication requirements.

Please note: the sending email client will need to be configured for SMTP Authentication (check the box "My server requires authentication"). In addition, please be aware that this particular option may cause problems if you have remote users sending mail via their ISP's email server.
