Email Threat Trend Report — Q4 2007
In 2007, botnets came of age, developing into sophisticated peer-to-peer networks that dynamically avoid blacklisting and ferociously fight back against anyone who tries to take them down. The most detrimental botnet thus far was seeded by the Storm worm and has been used to send spam, malware, phishing, and even perform distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. Botnets were responsible for keeping global spam levels high, averaging 80% throughout the year and peaking in early Q4 at 96%. The year ended with another sharp peak due to a series of holiday-themed outbreaks. Read the full report.

Outlook Connector for MDaemon
Setting up Outlook Connector to show public contacts when composing is easy. Just make sure you have the public contacts folder showing. For more information, see our knowledge base article KBA-01666.
Having trouble with free/busy when setting up a meeting? Outlook 2003 requires that you use ‘check names’ after entering meeting attendees or adding them directly from your address book. Once this has been done, Free/Busy should be functioning properly.
MDaemon / WorldClient / Outlook Connector
When adding or removing users from MDaemon, be sure to re-export accounts and list names to the public address book. Updating by exporting assures current, up to date address books. In MDaemon, click Accounts → Exporting → Export accounts and list names to the Public Address book.
Note: Keeping your personal address book updated and synchronized with WorldClient, the Windows Address Book, and other MAPI mail clients that use the Windows Address Book, can easily be done using ComAgent. The ComAgent installer can be downloaded from WorldClient's Option section.
Product Updates
MDaemon Email Server for Windows 9.6.4 - Now Available!
In addition to several performance enhancements, there are two key enhancements from 9.6.3:
Improvements to the Active Directory monitoring feature
MDaemon’s Active Directory monitoring feature now logs all attributes and values discovered during its query. This should help debugging any problems that may arise as well as assisting in selecting the right attributes to map to account properties (remember, you can use any Active Directory attribute(s) you want).
MDaemon automatically converts numerous 8-bit accented characters to their ASCII equivalents for the Mailbox field. This creates valid email addresses based on Active Directory queries by removing accent marks. For instance, õ becomes o; ä becomes a; and á, é, í, ó, ú becomes a, e, i, o, u, etc. This process is also customizable for use with other special characters. This also streamlines the Active Directory query so that it makes less demands on the AD server.
Orderly and more descriptive headers - enhanced from 9.6.3
MDaemon version 9.6.3 began inserting various new headers into messages in a more organized fashion. MDaemon 9.6.4 introduces a new header called X-MDBadQueue-Reason — this header explains why the message was moved to the Bad Queue. The reason becomes part of the message itself and does not require a search through the logs to determine what the reason is.
We continue to strive to make message headers as organized as possible. MDaemon will now prepend rather than append the various headers that it inserts into messages. Always appending headers to the end of the header section often makes it impossible to tell which server inserted them. MDaemon now inserts it’s various X-MD* and other headers immediately following the required trace headers (return-path and Received). The X-MD* headers are now nicely grouped in the header, making them easier to find and read.
SecurityPlus for MDaemon 3.0.6 - Now Available!
Protect and secure your organization with the newly released SecurityPlus for MDaemon, featuring several new performance enhancements to its scanning process, virus definition updating, and virus library file handling.
